Etiquette keeps play safe and predictable even when formal rules do not cover every everyday situation. The central idea is simple: do not distract the shooter and respect the equipment.

Turns and silence

While an opponent addresses the shot, stay out of their sight line, do not walk near the cue head and avoid commentary. Confirm whose turn it is before a new visit.

Safety

Do not lean on the table, place phones or drinks on the rail, or walk behind an active backswing without warning. In a club, return the cue to its rack when stepping away.

Disputed moments

If a foul or contact is unclear, pause and agree how to check it before the next shot. In competition, call the referee instead of arguing over the table.

After the game, return balls, chalk and rack, and tell staff about any damage.
