A break cue is built for a powerful opening shot; a playing cue prioritises cue-ball control and position. One cue can do both for casual play, but with a compromise.

Construction

Break cues commonly use a harder tip and stiffer shaft to transfer energy with less compression. Playing cues are tuned for accuracy, spin and a softer contact feel.

Choosing one

Frequent 8-ball or 9-ball players may benefit from a separate break cue that takes impact and preserves the playing tip. Occasional players can prioritise a well-fitted all-round cue.
