Carom is played without pockets, so bed accuracy and cushion response control every three-ball route. A small tilt is quickly exposed, making installation quality especially important.
Bed and slate
Match the playing field to UMB rules rather than comparing outside dimensions alone. A properly joined slate bed provides a stable base; wood is suitable for casual home play only when the maker specifies it.
Cushions and cloth
Cushion profile and resilience set the rebound, while a smooth fast cloth affects energy loss. Ask for the exact rubber profile, cloth construction and tensioning method. Pool cloth should not be assumed compatible with carom play.
Installation checks
The installer levels the bed in several directions and tunes the rails. Test a ball along and across the table, compare rebound symmetry and look for steps at slate joins.
Complete the purchase
Budget for dedicated lighting, a carom ball set, a cover and periodic recovering. State separate warranty terms for slate, cushions and installation in the order.
