Pyramid names describe different ways to score and execute shots. Check the event's current regulations first; local leagues may add conditions.
Free pyramid
In free pyramid the player can generally choose the object ball, while the cue ball becomes any ball after contact. That opens more positional routes and makes safety play especially important.
Combined pyramid
The combined format adds restrictions on ball choice and calls. Tactics become more deliberate: a player plans both the pot and the position left for the next visit.
Dynamic pyramid
Dynamic pyramid has its own break, turn-order and scoring conditions. Do not import free-pyramid habits automatically; study the rule set and practise the shots it permits.
All formats still depend on a sound table, correct balls and safe conduct. The main difference is the decision-making framework.
