Chalk stays predictable when it is kept away from water, oil, and loose lint. An open cube in a cue case may absorb towel moisture and collect grit long before it looks damaged.

Choose a dry setup

Keep it in a lidded container at a stable room temperature. A desiccant packet can sit in the case separately, but its granules should not rub against the cube. Avoid bathrooms, windowsills, and bags containing damp clothing.

Carry and clean it carefully

Use a dedicated pocket or rigid holder instead of sharing space with keys. Do not tap chalk against the rail to remove dust. Wipe the base after play and use a cloth-safe cleaner for marks on the table.

Replacement signs

Heavy crumbling, wet lumps, or an uneven stripe on the tip justify replacement. Inspect the tip at the same time: fresh chalk cannot restore a glazed leather surface.
