Taper describes how shaft diameter changes from tip to joint and how much room the bridge hand needs during the stroke. It is a fit and technique decision, not a simple quality ranking.

The profiles

A pro taper keeps nearly the same diameter farther down the shaft and gives a predictable sliding bridge. A conical taper expands more visibly toward the joint and may feel firmer. A straight taper changes diameter steadily along its length.

Choosing by feel

Set your bridge and make smooth practice strokes. If the shaft catches your fingers or forces a grip change, the profile is wrong for you regardless of fashion. Test it with the intended tip diameter and thickness.
