Good lighting shows the ball consistently across the bed and does not dazzle a player at address. Choose the fitting with the table format and ceiling height in mind.

Length and alignment

The lit area should cover the playing field, not just its centre. Centre the fitting over the table; a sideways offset creates rail shadows. Check joists and cable routes before drilling.

Height and comfort

A low shade interferes with the cue, while a high one leaves dark corners. Follow the maker's installation guidance and assess the light from a standing player's eye level. Diffused matte output is preferable to exposed bright bulbs.

Maintenance

Dust the shades, replace lamps with matching colour temperature and keep accent spotlights out of players' eyes. Clubs should provide safe access to switches and service points.
